I efteråret 2025 præsenterer HFKD soloudstillingen Elsewhere med den danske illustrator Jesper Ejsing. Udstillingen samler en række af Ejsings originale værker skabt til det verdensberømte kortspil Magic: The Gathering og giver publikum mulighed for at opleve fantasykunsten uden for spillets kontekst. Her træder illustrationerne frem som selvstændige værker, hvor både fortælling, stemning og malerisk kunnen får lov at stå klart. 

Jesper Ejsing (f. 1973) er en af Danmarks mest internationalt anerkendte illustratorer inden for fantasygenren. Han har i mere end to årtier været med til at forme det visuelle univers i spil som Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons og World of Warcraft, og hans værker nyder kultstatus blandt samlere og fans verden over. Samtidig er Elsewhere den første større solopræsentation af hans arbejde i en dansk kunstinstitution. 

Ejsings praksis er funderet i en livslang fascination af fantasy og fortælling. Hans billeder forener præcision og detaljerigdom med en tydelig glæde ved spontanitet og malerisk frihed. Dynamiske figurer, ekspressive farver og drømmelignende scenerier skaber verdener fulde af orker, elvere, troldmænd og dragende landskaber. Som han selv formulerer det: "At male ud fra en personlig vinkel, at udtrykke sine egne idéer og historier, er nøglen til at skabe billeder, der bliver hængende i erindringen." 

De originale malerier og tegninger, der danner grundlag for de små spillekort, fungerer ikke blot som rekvisitter i et globalt spilunivers, men som portaler til andre virkeligheder. Når de vises i udstillingsrummet, åbnes et større billedfelt, hvor de narrative og kunstneriske kvaliteter træder tydeligere frem. 

Elsewhere er samtidig en del af udstillingsrækken SAGA, hvor HFKD sætter fokus på kunstnere, der arbejder med fortælling og mytologi i bred forstand. Serien undersøger kunstens evne til at skabe fiktive verdener og forankre dem i nutidige visuelle praksisser – fra populærkulturens universer til billedkunstneriske eksperimenter. 

Ejsings værker peger netop på denne dobbelte forankring: de indgår i et globalt spilkulturelt kredsløb, men rummer samtidig en dybt personlig billedverden, hvor malerisk energi og fantasi går hånd i hånd. Elsewhere viser, hvordan fantasykunst kan fungere som både billedfortælling og kunstnerisk udsagn – og hvordan billeder kan blive stående i bevidstheden længe efter, vi har forladt dem.

Part of the exhibition series SAGA 

In the fall of 2025, HFKD presents Elsewhere, a solo exhibition by Danish illustrator Jesper Ejsing. The exhibition brings together a selection of Ejsing’s original works created for the world-renowned card game Magic: The Gathering, offering audiences the chance to experience fantasy art outside the context of the game. Here, the illustrations appear as independent works, where both narrative, atmosphere, and painterly skill stand out. 

Jesper Ejsing (b. 1973) is among Denmark’s most internationally recognized illustrators within the fantasy genre. For more than two decades, he has helped shape the visual universes of games such as Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and World of Warcraft. His works enjoy cult status among collectors and fans worldwide, at the same time Elsewhere marks the first major presentation of his practice in a Danish art institution. 

Ejsing’s practice is rooted in a lifelong fascination with fantasy and storytelling. His paintings combine precision and meticulous detail with a clear joy in spontaneity and painterly freedom. Dynamic figures, expressive colors, and dreamlike settings conjure worlds populated by orcs, elves, wizards, and expansive landscapes. As he himself states: “Painting from a personal angle, expressing your own ideas and stories, is key to creating images that will linger in the mind.” 

The original paintings and drawings behind the trading cards function not only as visual tools in a global gaming universe, but as portals to other realities. Shown within the exhibition space, they open up a larger pictorial field where their narrative and artistic qualities are revealed in new ways. 

Elsewhere is also part of SAGA, HFKD’s exhibition series highlighting artists who work with narrative and mythology in a broad sense. The series explores art’s ability to create fictional worlds and anchor them in contemporary visual practices—spanning from the universes of popular culture to experimental approaches in visual art. 

Ejsing’s works embody this dual grounding: they circulate within a global gaming culture while simultaneously containing a deeply personal painterly world where energy and imagination go hand in hand. Elsewhere demonstrates how fantasy art can function both as visual storytelling and as artistic expression—and how images can continue to resonate in our minds long after we have left them.
